Part of the PCL approach is to support a learning environment where students can work at their own pace, creating breakout spaces outside the classrooms and developing opportunities for activity settings in the classrooms.

At Skapaskolan, PCL was engaged to help teachers make their modular classrooms less static and more dynamic.

PCL designed rooms where the class can meet as a large group, in small cooperative groups and independently.

The addition of more private areas was created for those students who liked to work individually.

The result are spaces that support an alternative learning environment where learners can work at their own pace at any time.

With this arrangement, the children learn, but I don’t feel like I am teaching anymore.

What we did

Educational Planning and school design for the existing and new Skapaskolan school buildings.

In 2013, PCL was invited by the school to present ideas about contemporary educational facilities from around the world. After the presentations, Peter was approached by a few of the teachers to help them make their modular classrooms less static and more dynamic.

Outcomes

Rooms where the class can meet as a large group, in small cooperative groups and independently. Additionally, more private areas were created for those students who liked to work individually. As one teacher stated, “With this arrangement, the children learn, but I don’t feel like I am teaching anymore.”

Given the success of the classroom spaces, Peter was engaged to develop and Educational Brief and plan the new Skapaskolan with Street Monkey Architects. The result are spaces that support an alternative learning environment where learners can work at their own pace at any time. This was achieved by creating breakout spaces outside the classrooms and developing opportunities for activity settings in the classrooms.
